Septuagesima Sunday
The three sundays preceding ash wednesday are called Septuagesima, Sexgesima, and Quinquagesima, which mean, respectively, the seventieth, sixtieth, and fiftieth day, that is, before Easter.
“Man, victim of the sin of Adam and his own sins, is justly afflicted; groans and sorrows encompass him. “
On these sundays the Gloria in Excelsis and Alleluia are omitted, and the violet vestments are used, in preparation for lent.
Then Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say unto you: Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you.
