The Priest sprinkles the palm ashes with holy water, then incenses them.

He puts ashes on his head, then on the heads of those present because the Head is the seat of pride. As he does this he says:

Meménto, homo, quia pulvis es, et in púlverem revertéris

“Remember, man, that thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return”

“he shall confess his sin that he has committed. And he shall make full restitution for his wrong, adding a fifth to it and giving it to him to whom he did the wrong.” Num. 5:7

God, the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of his Son has reconciled the world to himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the Forgiveness of Sins; through the ministry of the Church may God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
